1953 The British Council opens its Tokyo Centre
1960 A Cultural Agreement between Japan and the UK is signed, designating the British Council as the UK's official agency for cultural relations in Japan
1986 The British Council relocates to Kagurazaka, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo. The opening ceremony of the British Council Tokyo Centre and the Cambridge English School was held with Prince Charles in attendance.
1999 The names of the two organisations are unified to the 'British Council'.
2003 The British Council celebrates its 50th anniversary in Japan.
2008 The British Council co-oranises UK-Japan 2008 with the British Embassy.
2013 The British Council celebrates its 60th anniversary in Japan.
2019 The British Council co-organises 'UK in Japan 2019-20' with the British Embassy
2021 In response to the spread of Covid-19 infections and the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, 'UK in Japan 2019-20' has been extended to autumn 2021.
2023 The British Council celebrates its 70th anniversary in Japan
