Notice Concerning Breach of Former Employees’ Personal Information

This is notification to former employees of British Council Japan who left after 21 June 2008.  Former employees who left British Council Japan prior to 21 June 2008 are not affected.

A ransomware attack took place on 5 June 2023 on an HR cloud tool, which is used by a labour consultancy, our direct supplier. The security incident is directly managed by a software company and they have issued regular updates since becoming aware of the attack. They have also promptly notified the Personal Data Protection Commission in Japan as well as the police. The British Council and the labour consultancy will also jointly notify the Personal Data Protection Commission.

Following a full investigation, we have now received the assurance that the software company has not detected any data breach to a third party.

If you are a former direct employee of the British Council Japan and left the British Council Japan after 21 June 2008, and have any concerns about what has happened or would like further information, please contact us online.
