British Council teachers of adults are all trained to teach English as a foreign language and have an internationally recognised teaching certificate. They have been carefully selected for their qualifications and teaching experience.

Many of our teachers have specific knowledge in areas such as language assessment, materials development, and teaching business English, and they have a wealth of experience teaching adult classes both in Japan and other countries.

Our teachers' classroom practice is supported by a dedicated and expert academic management team which provides continued professional development for teachers through regular observations, training, and performance reviews.

Our minimum requirements for teachers are:

  • education to degree level or equivalent qualification
  • CELTA/CertTESOL - Certificate level qualification in teaching English as a foreign language
  • high proficiency in the use of the English language

Other qualifications our teachers hold include:

  • Masters in Applied Linguistics and TEFL
  • DELTA/DipTESOL - Diploma level qualification in teaching English
  • PGCE- Post Graduate Certificate in Education (or equivalent)

Meet some of our teachers

Alex Caughey

I started teaching in 2000 and I have worked in Vienna, Osaka, Singapore and Hong Kong. I am also an academic manager. What I like most about teaching is seeing my students’ enjoyment as they progress. Learning a language is one of the most rewarding things you can do.

Qualifications: Masters in Applied Linguistics, DELTA, CELTA

Interests: I am a big football fan, both watching and playing. In the winter, I love going skiing – Japan has the best snow in the world!

I have taught English in the UK and Japan since 2001. I am also a DELTA tutor for teachers.  As a teacher, I love seeing students grow in confidence as their English skills develop. I believe everyone can learn a language, and I strive to help every student in my classes reach their goals.

I came to Japan in 2001 and have lived in Niigata and Tokyo. I love getting to know my students and creating interesting content-based lessons and materials which motivate them to learn more.

Qualifications: MA in Applied Linguistics, CELTA

Interests: I’m an avid reader – I enjoy reading both fiction and non-fiction. I also love history, and I visit museums whenever I get the chance.

Ian Dickie

In my teaching career, I have been fortunate to work in Europe and Saudi Arabia. I am also an examiner and teacher trainer for Cambridge qualifications. One of the most rewarding things about teaching is helping students find the words they need to express themselves and their personalities in English.

Qualifications: DELTA, CELTA

Interests: I enjoy music and the outdoors. Japan is great for camping – I love getting out of the city and spending time in nature.
