About ‘Scored in Silence’

Chisato Minamimura is a London-based performance artist whose work, ‘Scored in Silence’ (2019), was first presented in 2019 as part of the British Council's Edinburgh Showcase and the Carthage Theatre Days Festival in Tunisia. It has also been presented online, with accompanying workshops in the UK, Canada, Korea, Chile and Mexico.

Scored in Silence is a digital performance work born out of an encounter with deaf survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The work is based on their untold histories and interview testimonies. What Minamimura brings out in this work is the hitherto unreported experience of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and the subsequent stories of those who are deaf. Along with the cruelty of the atomic bomb, the film tells the sad story of isolation and discrimination faced by deaf survivors.

We interviewed the artist about the process of creating this work.
