The contemporary British composer Anna Meredith has transformed Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, perhaps the most famous Baroque violin concerto, into a new work, Anno. The piece has received continued critical acclaim ever since its debut performance in London in 2016. It will have its first performance in Japan as part of Yokohama Otomatsuri 2019, a music festival held over roughly two months from 15 September. The Scottish Ensemble, who are visiting Japan for the first time, perform the piece with the warmth which you would expect of a British string ensemble, and Meredith’s highly original music depicts a new “year” in the 21st Century through her multifarious powers of expression (“Anno” means “year” in Latin).
