London’s Courtauld Gallery has achieved renown as the UK’s treasure house of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. Around 60 works from the gallery’s collection are coming to Japan. Samuel Courtauld, the British industrialist who founded the gallery, used his outstanding aesthetic sensibilities to energetically collect modern French paintings, mainly from the 1920s. In 1932, he donated this collection to the art research institute which he had established at the University of London. The Courtauld Gallery was born as the exhibition space for this collection. This exhibition pays due attention to the gallery’s research aspect in the explanatory materials, which reflect the results of art historical research and investigations. Visitors can enjoy a rich dialogue with masterpieces of painting and sculpture such as the masterpiece of Manet’s later years, A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, as well as works by Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin, and others.
