The ballet Romeo and Juliet by Matthew Bourne, the remarkable British director and choreographer, has been made into a film which will open in Japan. A special performance at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre was recorded for this film. The piece brims over with Matthew Bourne’s novel storytelling ability, recreating this classic ballet with a new vision of the world, and the principal roles are played by young stars of the New Adventure Company. Set in the “Verona Institute”, an establishment which represses and divides young people in order to subordinate them, the two young lovers sacrifice everything to follow their own hearts. Shakespeare’s classic work is reborn in a passionate and contemporary format.
