Nina Casson McGarva, a British glass sculptor from Gloucester, will undertake a residency of around one month in Nagata Ward, Kobe. The Naked Craft Project, a project which connects Kobe’s Nagata Ward with the world through exchanges between young contemporary craftspeople, selects one artist every two years in a competition sponsored by the UK’s Contemporary Glass Society. During her residency, McGarva will work in “Soko”, a collaborative studio for craftspeople and artists which will open in 2019 on the site of a warehouse formerly used to store Kobe’s soft drinks such as apple soda and lemonade. The project enables Japanese and British contemporary glass artists and contemporary craftspeople to share ideas and inspiration through cultural exchange based on craftsmanship.
