The first time in Japan at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan)
Cape Farewell - Art and Climate Change
An exhibition owned by Cape Farewell and organised and loaned by the Barbican Art Galleries owned, funded and managed by the City of London Corporation

The British Council proudly presents the “Cape Farewell Exhibition - Art & Climate Change” to be held at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) from 6 July to 17 August 2008. This exhibition is officially accredited as a UK-Japan 2008 event.

Cape Farewell’s international team of artists and scientists have travelled in a 100-year old Dutch schooner, the Noorderlicht, to the frozen world of the High Arctic, the frontline of climate change, where they witness, understand, and react to the rapidly changing Arctic environment. The team has embarked on four separate expeditions since the first voyage in 2003. The Cape Farewell touring exhibition celebrates the research and artwork that have evolved from this arctic adventure and aims to engage and inspire the audience through the commitment, hard work and inspiration of the artists and scientists involved.

The exhibition hosts a range of artwork including those by David Buckland, the founder of Cape Farewell and renowned designer, artist and film maker, as well as Shiro Takatani, the first Japanese artist to join the voyage.

A 5-day seminar for parents and children will be held over summer holidays. The lectures and hands-on experience will provide participants an opportunity to think about the global environment.

We hope that the beauty of the High Arctic conveyed through this exhibition will alert children and adults to how precious the earth is and how fragile the environment has become.
