About Japan - New Directions in English Language Assessment

Japan is located in East Asia, consisting of 47 prefectures located on four main islands as well as thousands of smaller islands. Japan is entirely surrounded by the sea, with Korea, China, and Russia being its closest neighbours. Tokyo is the capital and the largest city in the country.   

The country has a population of approximately 126 million people. Japanese is the largest ethnic group at 98.5%, followed by smaller groups of Chinese, Koreans, and other nationalities. Japanese is the country’s official language though there are minority languages and dialects spread throughout the country. 

The New Directions 2019 venue is in the PACIFICO Yokohama, one of the largest convention centres in the world. The PACIFICO Yokohama is located in the Minato Mirai 21 district of Yokohama, surrounded by water, greenery, and complete with a variety of accommodation, restaurant options, and more. The conference centre is a short train ride from Haneda airport and downtown Tokyo.
