Many countries including the UK and Japan are learning to live with populations with an increasing average age and higher proportions of their societies in the older age range. In order to explore the positive potential of ageing, the University of Liverpool and Osaka University developed the working group “Living with an Ageing Society”.

The working group held interdisciplinary workshops between 22 and 28 October 2015 in Osaka and between 28 June and 5 July 2016 in Liverpool. In total 37 early career researchers (19 from the UK and 18 from Japan) from various fields including Medicine, Psychology and Education participated. In the first workshop hosted by Osaka University, participants learned about the latest approaches for dealing with the issues arising from an ageing society in Japan and developed new ideas to better live with an ageing society. Following the success of the Osaka workshop, the Liverpool workshop had complementary aims to facilitate active collaborations across different countries, languages and academic disciplines.
